Green Burials-save the real estate for the living

While I intend no disrespect to the dead, I have always been amazed that we still devote vast tracks of land to burial sites.  I am also not that keen on the thought of rotting in a box for years with worms crawling through me. My dad is paying to donate his body to science (yes you now pay them to take your body and use it in experimentation) which I think is a good thing) but I am not sure how green the ultimate disposal of remains will be there either.  Apparently cremation is also not great as mercury from dental fillings can end up in the air and water.  So the trend towards green burials is something that I think will be a great thing.  According to an article in the weekend Vancouver Sun, the European style ecological burials are on their way to Canada .  The article points out problems other than land use that are associated with traditional burials.  For example, the chemicals used in embalming and the existence of sustances in the body such as lead, mercury, etc. can all end up in the land and water table…not so good for the environment and human health.  The new style of burial looks to eliminate these problems.  Will have to wait and see how this progresses.
